For anyone planning a home-office setup, a dedicated editing station or a shared family computer, the appeal is easy to understand: choose a display that suits your needs, connect your accessories and keep the computer itself out of the way.
However, the buying decision deserves more thought than simply choosing the newest processor. Storage capacity, memory and the cost of your complete setup deserve just as much attention.
A Small Desktop That Leaves Room for Everything Else
The Mac mini measures 12.7cm wide, 12.7cm deep and 5cm tall, with the M6 version weighing approximately 0.67kg. That makes it an interesting option for workspaces where every centimetre counts.
Think of a desk that also needs to accommodate a notebook, camera equipment, charging accessories or a child’s homework. A smaller computer leaves more room for the things you use throughout the day, without making the entire workspace revolve around the machine.
There is also flexibility in how you build the setup. The Mac mini works with compatible displays and accessories, allowing buyers to keep existing equipment rather than move to an entirely Apple-branded arrangement. That is particularly useful when replacing an older computer while retaining a perfectly serviceable monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Compared with the M4 Mac mini, Apple claims 40% faster CPU performance, up to twice the graphics performance and up to four times the AI performance. These figures come from Apple’s testing and should not be interpreted as an equivalent improvement in every application.
For buyers, the more useful question is where their current computer slows them down. Is it exporting a video, processing photographs or working through a demanding project? Those are more meaningful reasons to investigate an upgrade than the processor name alone.
Likewise, someone whose existing machine already handles documents, email and browser-based work comfortably should not feel obliged to replace it simply because a newer chip exists.
AI Capability, With a Practical Purpose
AI is a prominent part of Apple’s positioning for this generation. The company highlights tools such as Ollama and LM Studio, alongside supported creative applications, as examples of how the Mac mini can be used for local AI tasks.
That is an interesting direction, but “AI-ready” should not become a substitute for understanding what you need a computer to do.
Before buying primarily for AI, identify the application and model you intend to use, then check their hardware requirements. The right configuration should follow the task, rather than the assumption that every AI feature will work equally well on every model.
For a general home-office buyer, AI capability can be an additional benefit. It does not have to be the main reason to purchase.
Useful Connections for a Busy Desk
Both versions support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and standard 2.5Gb Ethernet, with an optional 10Gb Ethernet upgrade. On the front are two USB-C ports supporting USB 3 speeds up to 10Gb/s and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The rear connections distinguish the two models. The M6 version offers three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M5 Pro provides three Thunderbolt 5 ports. Both also include HDMI. Neither has a built-in SD card slot or USB-A port, so photographers and users with older accessories should account for a suitable reader or adapter.
Before checkout, list the accessories you use every week. It is better to budget for the right connections early than discover afterwards that your preferred setup needs another hub.

The entry-level M6 Mac mini pairs 16GB of unified memory with a 256GB SSD. Apple also lists M6 configurations with 512GB of storage, including an option with 24GB of memory.
For a desktop that might become your main work machine, our advice is to look carefully at that starting storage capacity. Buyers keeping substantial photo libraries, video projects or other large files locally should budget for their actual needs rather than focus only on the lowest advertised price.
A sensible starting point is to check how much space your current computer already uses. Then allow for future projects, applications and personal files.
Depending on your workload, spending more on storage or memory could be a more practical decision than moving straight to a higher-tier processor.
Where the M5 Pro Fits In
Despite the lower generation number, the M5 Pro is the higher-tier option in this Mac mini range. Its standard configuration includes a 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory and 512GB SSD.
The range can be configured with up to an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU and 64GB of unified memory. Apple positions it for more demanding creative and technical work, including video production, 3D applications and development.
Our buying approach would be straightforward: evaluate the M6 first, then move up when your applications, project sizes or connectivity requirements justify the additional cost. Being a content creator does not automatically mean you need the Pro model.
Malaysian Pricing and Availability
In Malaysia, the Mac mini with M6 starts at RM3,799, with education pricing beginning at RM3,399 for eligible buyers. The Mac mini with M5 Pro starts at RM7,499, or RM7,099 through Apple’s education pricing. Availability begins on 22 September 2026.
The box includes the Mac mini and its power cable, but not a monitor, keyboard or mouse. Anyone building a setup from scratch should include those additional costs in their comparison.
