Pocket-sized cinematography is getting a major upgrade. In a move that signals a bold expansion into a new product category, Insta360 today unveiled the Luna Ultra—its flagship gimbal camera co-engineered with luxury optics manufacturer Leica.
Announced at Leica’s historic headquarters in Wetzlar, the device marks the culmination of a six-year, five-product partnership between the two imaging giants. By pairing Leica’s legendary optical heritage with Insta360’s Emmy Award-winning stabilization and artificial intelligence, the Luna Ultra aims to establish a new benchmark for mobile filmmakers and content creators. “Luna Ultra marks Insta360’s arrival in the gimbal camera space, backed by the full strength of our imaging expertise,” said Max Richter, VP of Marketing and Co-Founder of Insta360. “We believe this category is ready for a new standard, defined by smarter technology, stronger performance, and a more intuitive user experience.”

Groundbreaking Optics and Dual-Lens Design

At the core of the Luna Ultra’s appeal is an industry-first combination of raw power and versatility. The primary camera features a Leica Summicron lens paired with a massive 1-inch sensor capable of shooting pristine 8K video and 37MP UltraPhotos. For creators requiring tighter framing, the device integrates a secondary telephoto lens system utilizing a 1/1.3-inch sensor and a bright F2.0 aperture. This dual-lens architecture enables natural bokeh across five distinct focal lengths, offering up to 12× zoom (including 6× lossless zoom) and a 200MP Scenic Panorama mode. For professional post-production workflows, the camera records 8K at 30fps with Dolby Vision and supports 10-bit I-Log capture. Boasting up to 14 stops of dynamic range, the system ensures critical detail is preserved in both harsh highlights and deep shadows. Low-light environments are managed by a dedicated PureVideo Mode that leverages a new Triple AI Chip to suppress noise in resolutions up to 4K60fps.

Form Factor and Hardware Innovations

Weighing just over 200g—roughly equivalent to a modern smartphone—the Luna Ultra is built for maximum portability without sacrificing hardware utility.

Key Hardware Specifications:

  • Display: Detachable 2″ OLED touchscreen (supports HD remote monitoring up to 20 meters).
  • Battery: 1550mAh capacity offering up to 4 hours of use; fast-charges to 80% in ~23 minutes.
  • Storage: 47GB built-in usable storage, expandable up to 1TB via microSD.
The device relies on a robust mechanical 3-axis stabilization system combined with electronic image stabilization (EIS) to eliminate camera shake during intense movement. This is paired with Deep Track 5.0, an AI-driven tracking suite that includes Auto Tracking, Group Tracking, and Smart Framing to keep subjects locked in focus automatically.

Professional Workflows and Ecosystem

Recognizing the needs of high-end editors, the Luna Ultra natively incorporates signature Leica color profiles (Natural, Vivid, and Chrome) and supports the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) workflow. To streamline multi-camera productions, built-in timecode synchronization allows for seamless editing within industry-standard software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. Audio features include an integrated wind guard and direct compatibility with the Insta360 Mic system. “This launch represents more than a new product announcement,” noted Marius Eschweiler, VP of Business Unit Mobile at Leica Camera AG. “It reflects the shared vision and long-term collaboration between Insta360 and Leica, combining optical heritage with a new generation of intelligent imaging technology.”

Pricing and Availability

The Insta360 Luna Ultra will retail in two colorways: Cosmic Black and Stellar White. The device is available immediately via the official Insta360 Store, major e-commerce platforms including Shopee and Lazada, and select global retailers. Pricing for the Malaysian market is confirmed to start at MYR 2,999, with broader rollout in secondary markets to follow.
